Submersible Well Pumps

Submersible pumps are the most common type of pump used in modern residential and commercial water wells. They are installed below the water level inside the well casing, where they push water up to the surface under pressure. Submersible pumps are highly efficient, quiet in operation, and designed for long service life—but when they fail, they must be pulled from the well for service or replacement, which requires specialized equipment and experience. Jet Pumps

Jet pumps are surface-mounted pumps used with shallower wells where the water level is close enough to the surface for suction-based pumping. Shallow well jet pumps handle water tables within approximately 25 feet of the surface; deep well jet pumps use a venturi assembly in the well to extend their effective range.   • How long do well pumps typically last?

    Submersible well pumps have a typical service life of 10 to 15 years, though they can last longer with favorable water quality and conditions. Factors that affect pump lifespan include water chemistry (highly corrosive or abrasive water shortens pump life), frequency of on-off cycling, pump sizing relative to the well's yield, and the quality of the original pump installation. If your pump is approaching or past 10 years of age and beginning to show performance issues, having it evaluated is a wise investment—catching a pump at the end of its service life before complete failure allows for a planned replacement rather than an emergency repair.

  • What causes a well pump to short cycle?

    Short cycling—where the pump turns on and off rapidly, sometimes multiple times per minute—is most commonly caused by a waterlogged pressure tank. The pressure tank contains an air bladder or air charge that provides a cushion of stored pressure, allowing the pump to rest between draws. When the air charge is depleted, the tank fills completely with water, and the pump must run every time even a small amount of water is drawn. A failed bladder in a bladder-type pressure tank or loss of the air charge in a plain-steel tank are the most common causes. Short cycling dramatically shortens pump life and should be addressed promptly.
